How to use it

- 2Start with the family that feels closest, then move outward until a shade fits.
- 3If nothing fits, keep the rough word. “Off” is a real starting point.
- 4Note what happened right before. The trigger is usually more useful than the label.
The eight families
Anger
Something crossed a line. The low shades — annoyed, miffed, peeved — are the ones most often skipped.

Happiness
Openness and ease. Naming the shade — pleased, buoyant, grateful — keeps it from flattening into a vague “good”.

Triggered
An old alarm firing in a new room. The feeling is real; its size usually belongs to an earlier moment.

Tender
Closeness and care, often mixed with ache. Fondness, being moved, longing for someone.

Petty

Numb

Fear
